Now I got it.....

Attended my last class with Dr Malachi Edwin on 19th February 2006. I was a bit sad and down. I enjoy his class so much as he has always been a dedicated lecturer I ever had througout my TESL course. A lot of new things I gain from him.

Regarding the blog, Dr Malachi advised us not to write other unappropriate things. All he wants us to write about is the process of doing our assignment 1 and how we managed to create the thesis statement. He is indeed a very stern person... Well that is what I like about him. He knows his core-business well. I think I have to delete other unrelevant topics that I have posted here. The reason why I post them at first because I thot as this blog is defined as electronic diary so I think it should be alright to post something that I wanna express. I have been wasting my time.....

Then Dr Malachi explained on how to go about assignment 3. It seemed that for my 3rd assignment , I am required to write a research paper. We are given choices. The first choice is whether to choose one author and his/her literary text.. or the other one to choose two authors and two literary texts . The 2nd choice is more on comparing and contrasting. We may use what aspects to argue and discuss... it can be the theme, setting or any other we prefer.

Actually, I have decided what to use two different novels written by two different authors. I need to draft my critics about their literary work.
I would compare theme...
I will jot down my points, do my research and then will post it here....
I will do it immediately after my mid semester exam is over.....

Still doin my position paper...........

Hello ...

It has been a while since my last time here. I have been very busy preparing my position paper. I need to put all the five points together smoothly. I also have to find the evidence from the novel to proof and to support my ideas. Many drafts have been made so far. The final draft is yet to come out.

As mentioned earlier, I have choosen 'The Awakenings' by Kate Chopin's famous novel as my assignment. I wanna to discuss about Edna's rebellion as a mother and wife which became the cause of her downfall.

It was a tragic decision of Edna. She is a woman who fail to achieve herfull identity. Two other women mentioned in the novel, Adele and Mlle. Reisz managed to settle with their life. Unluckily, Edna commits suicide because she is unable to do so. The question is, Edna rebels her life as a wife and mother independently but why she never fully reaches the end of her search for selfhood... I will try my best to peel off the issues.

Going through tough moments......

Finding thesis statement was quite challenging...but once you get the points all written...then the idea just flow....reading also takes some time....

I find that I do not have enough time to finish my position paper. With all the mundane stuffs I have to face everyday such as school's workload, at home and all the courses for this semester really tensed me up and spoil my mood.

....but one thing for sure all need to be done on time. May be is true what my tutor said "when you are doing post grade, actually you are walking through your tears and laughters..........." Need to gain my strength please....God give me strength to go through all this....

It is a bit tough, not to say difficult, but need so much effort. There are twothings that I need to do today. First, I need to look at the drafts and begin to identify the mistake that I have made. Secondly, I need to rearrange the paragraphs so that the flow of my discussions will fit properly. The main objective of my position paper is about what contribute to Edna's downfall.

Need to change my thesis statement....

After revising the thesis statement made last week, I decided to edit it. I am doing that because I don't think I will have strong points to discuss and argue about the issue. So the new thesis statement I will be doing for my position paper is as below:

" Edna's rebellion against social norms by abandoning her husband and her children drives her to her downfall"

I already have four points to discuss in the position paper and will shortly come up with the fifth points. I hope so much that I have made the right choice. I will try my very best to complete the assignment before my second face to face or earlier so that I can focus my attention for my coming mid semester exam which is just around the corner. Hopefully my lecturer will be giving us some tips for the coming exam as usual....

Arguing moments....

We often hear ..
" Beauty is to the eyes of the beholder ".

And ... what does Edna feel when she first married. Does she think that she is beautiful. Does she think that her husband is good looking or does she care what other people think??
But what is beauty? Does beauty alone guarantee a happy marriage? Are people as shallow as Edna look at form rather than content? Or have the contents changed so much that the form no longer attractive? I see many people got married to persons that I would have thot will never get married; because of not pretty, not handsome, not rich, not sane, not civil, etc. But they got married, have many children. They are happy, I guess. These are the people I admire because they are sane and they work on their relationship. But there is something about Edna, the protagonist of The Awakenings. She acted differently for a woman in her era. She has such courage to have an affair with another man where else her era prohibited and against it. Being single and never been married should acknowledge the limitation of understanding and remember the words .. I know some comments on the net about Edna, are based on one's person personal views. But I want them to see there are million more out there who enjoy marriage life till they die. And if Edna is still alive now, she will surely regretted her foolish decision especially leaving/abandoning her husband and kids. But the question is, is it fair to just blame her without investigating the truth...
It is a lesson to look at others suffering, but is it not a lesson to look at the happier things? In order to reveal it, I need to find more evidence in the novel, get to know Edna's character well, and must read about the author of the novel, the respectful Kate Chopin. Till then ...

In the making of a Thesis Statement...Who said it is easy!!

After going through all the steps mentioned in Dr Malachi's EDU3234 module... finally this is my thesis statement :

" Edna’s rebellion against her life as a wife and mother as she awakens in a newly discovered feeling of freedom reveals her adventurous and independent character. "

I hope this thesis statement will be accepted by my respectful lecturer... Dr Malachi Edwin.
I came up with the thesis statement because from my opinion, Edna, the protagonist in the novel entitle "The Awakenings" by Kate Chopin, tries to break free from her conventions by abandoning her husband and children. Her changing attitudes, also defining her as a character, and to foreshadow her important events and moods. She rebels against these forces by quitting her social duties as a member of the upper class. It is interesting that the repercussions for failing to abide by the social parameters of class are not nearly as damning as failing to abide by the social conventions of womanhood. Edna does not behave as a traditional woman would in those times at all.... Something interesting to be discuss... Wish me the b est of luck.
